Scalecoat Paint | The History
Scalecoat Paint has been a trusted name in model railroading and scale modeling for over 50 years. Renowned for our high-quality finishes and historically accurate railroad colors, Scalecoat has helped generations of modelers bring their projects to life with precision, authenticity, and enduring beauty.
Founded with the goal of providing professional-grade paints specifically formulated for scale models, Scalecoat quickly became the go-to choice for discerning hobbyists, collectors, and restoration experts across North America. From brass locomotives to plastic rolling stock, our products have been used to recreate everything from classic steam-era liveries to modern freight schemes.
In June of 2025 Scalecoat product line was purchased from Minute Man Scale Models and is officially under new ownership by Fusion Scale Hobbies / Fusion Scale Graphics. While we plan to bring the paint line back as well as the addition of many new colors, we plan to tackle the enormous line over some time. For an easy start into our new paint making adventure, we will begin the line with the Washaway paint remover while we work out the logistics of how we would like to bring the paint line back out to molders for years to come!
If you own a hobby shop and would like to set up a dealer account, please reach out to us today! As owners of a retail hobby shop, we want to support you, without great hobby shops there is no hobby.
We are currently working with Walthers to handle smaller dealer orders. Direct dealer accounts are welcome, however direct dealers will be required to purchase by the case vs individual items.
Two Legendary Formulas
We proudly offer two distinct paint lines:
- SCALECOAT I A high-gloss, solvent-based paint designed for metal and brass models. Known for its durable finish and exceptional color fidelity, it is the preferred choice for custom builders and restorers working with non-plastic surfaces.
- SCALECOAT II Specifically formulated for styrene and other plastics, Scalecoat II provides the same rich coverage and authentic colors with plastic-safe chemistry. It's ideal for kits, structures, and rolling stock of all kinds.
Authentic Railroad Colors
Scalecoat has one of the most extensive color libraries in the industry—featuring authentic hues from historic and modern railroads including Pennsylvania, Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, and more. Each color is carefully matched to prototype standards to ensure your models reflect true-to-life detail.
A Legacy of Quality, A Future of Innovation
While the brand has changed hands over the decades—from its roots to its current stewards—our mission remains the same: to provide modelers with the finest paint products available. Today, Scalecoat continues to serve hobbyists who share our passion for excellence.
Whether you're restoring a vintage brass engine or detailing a modern locomotive, Scalecoat Paint is here to help you finish strong—with color, quality, and craftsmanship that lasts.
"Remember, its how you finish that counts."
