Scalecoat has been trusted by modelers for generations, and preserving the colors and performance of the original paint line remains extremely important to us.
One of the historic yellow pigments used in the manufacture of certain Scalecoat colors has been permanently discontinued by its manufacturer. As a result, we must transition affected formulas to currently available pigments.
What This Means for Scalecoat Colors
Many Scalecoat colors did not use this pigment and will remain unchanged.
For the colors that were affected, we are carefully rebuilding each formula using a new combination of pigments to reproduce the established Scalecoat color as closely as possible. These colors will not simply receive a one-for-one pigment substitution. Each formula will be individually evaluated and adjusted before returning to production.
Because the original pigment is no longer available, some reformulated colors may have minor variations when compared with paint produced by Weaver Models, Minuteman Scale Models, or earlier Scalecoat production. Our goal is to minimize those differences while maintaining the familiar appearance, application, and performance customers expect from Scalecoat.
Helping Us Preserve Historic Scalecoat Colors
Scalecoat has been produced by several companies over many decades, and surviving production references can vary considerably. Original paint samples are extremely valuable as we evaluate and preserve these historic colors.
If you have older Scalecoat I or Scalecoat II paint, professionally prepared gloss color tiles, historical color standards, formula information, or other useful reference material, we would be grateful for the opportunity to review it.

Please include your name, email address, and any information you know about the sample, including the Scalecoat color name, product number, approximate age, and whether it was produced by Weaver Models, Minuteman Scale Models, or another previous manufacturer.
Please contact us before shipping liquid paint. Solvent-based paint may be subject to carrier restrictions and must be packaged and shipped properly. Dried paint samples and gloss color tiles are especially helpful and easier to handle safely. Please do not send an irreplaceable original unless arrangements have been made with us in advance.
While we cannot guarantee that submitted materials will be returned or that every historical variation can be duplicated exactly, we will use the available references to keep current Scalecoat production as consistent with the established colors as reasonably possible.
